May 13, 1853 – Location of railroad is decided - north of Canton, MS and across the Big Black River near the mouth of Doak’s Creek and will pass near Shongalo

 

August 6, 1857 – Completion of the railroad and beginnings of Vaiden

 

March 31, 1860 – Land for sale in and around Vaiden

 

July 30, 1874 – Dr. Vaiden proposes to donate a brick building for educational purposes – In addition, see THIS ARTICLE from 08/22/1874.

 

July 30, 1874 – Dr. Vaiden proposes that the building and 4 acres of land be gifted to the town and named the “Vaiden Institute”

 

January 7, 1880 – Dr. Vaiden proposes to assist the Legislature in building a College at Vaiden

 

January 9, 1880 – Dr. Vaiden is assisting about 75 students at the University of Mississippi at Oxford

 

January 9, 1880 – Dr. Vaiden offers to advance $50,000 to either of the 4 denominations, provided that it be matched to build a college in Vaiden

 

January 21, 1880 – Dr. Vaiden’s matching proposal unanimously adopted by citizens of Vaiden

 

January 31, 1880 – “A Mississippi Woman” writes the Mississippi Legislature suggesting that the college in Vaiden should be for White Females

 

February 3, 1880 – Newspaper article stating that the Legislature would be doing a good thing by accepting Dr. Vaiden’s proposal for cottages for the male students that he is sponsoring

 

February 6, 1880 – Dr. Vaiden “officially” asks Mississippi Legislature to make appropriations for erection of cottages for the male students that he is sponsoring – This article appeared in the paper the same day that Dr. Vaiden died

 

September 21, 1917 – Vaiden High School enrollment at 112 pupils

 

April 29, 1920 – Trustees of the Vaiden High School ponder salary increases for teachers of 44%

 

September 8, 1922 – Names of school teachers for the coming year
