— Services for Archie James Phillips, 43, of Vaiden, who died of head trauma received in
an all terrain vehicle accident Sunday, May 28, 2000
on Emory Road
in Holmes County,
will be at 3 p.m.
Saturday at Roberts & Sons Mortuary in Winona.
Mr Phillips was a laborer and a member of the Haven Methodist
Church in Vaiden.
He is survived by his two sons, Lajuan Washington of Seattle and Marcus
McDonald of Chicago; a mother and stepfather, Lucy and Jiles Edwards of Winona;
five brothers, Charles L. Phillips of Jackson, Arthur L. Phillips of
Kilmichael, Coleman Phillips of Vaiden, Kenneth Phillips, of Wartrace, Tenn.,
and Eddie B. Forrest of Winona; six sisters, Mary Stovall and Marilyn Hankins,
both of Gulfport, Lovie Phillips and Edith Cleveland, both of Chicago, Hattie
Gregory of Aurora, Ill., and Sherry Harvey of Country Club Hills, Ill.; and two
grandchildren.
The Rev. James Ross will officiate at the services. Burial will be at Vaiden Community
Cemetery.

- Services for James L. "Sonny" Meeks, 61, of Vaiden, who died from injuries
received in a one vehicle accident Friday, June 30, 2000,
at Tyler Holmes
Hospital in Winona,
will be at 2 p.m.
Saturday at Roberts and Sons Mortuary in Winona.
Mr. Meeks was a retired farmer and railroad laborer. He was also a member of
Irving Wragg Masonic Lodge Number 34 in West.
He was deacon and finance chairman at the Oklahoma Church of God in Christ in Carroll County. He was also the church's
assistant Sunday school superintendent and trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie Meeks of Vaiden, four sons, Robert Meeks and
James Meeks, both of Forrest, Curtis Meeks and Elder Vernon Meeks, both of Fort
Wayne, Ind.; two daughters, Janet Meeks and Pat Nathan, both of Fort Wayne,
Ind.; two brothers, Robert Meeks of Jackson and Franklin Green of Black Hawk;
two sisters, Jimmy Ola Jones of Black Hawk and Emily Adams of Greenwood; 12 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Elders Vernon Meeks and Alexander Reese will officiate at the services. Burial
will be in Mount Nebo Cemetery
near Black Hawk.
Visitation was to be from 2
to 6 this afternoon

- Services for Martha Pinkston Milner, 70, of Vaiden, who died of complications from
Alzheimer's disease Tuesday, July 4,
2000, at Grenada Lake
Medical Center

Friday at Vaiden Baptist Church.
Mrs. Milner was a physician assistant at Vaiden Medical Clinic.
She was a member of the Vaiden
Baptist Church
and served as assistant church treasurer.
She is survived by her husband, Henry S. Milner of Vaiden; a daughter, Dianne
Milner Barnett of Jackson; her mother, Eva Gober Pinkston of Winona; a sister,
Sara Pinkston Williams of Chickasaw, Ala.; a brother, James Pinkston of
Birmingham, Ala.; and one grandson.
The Rev. Earl Ezell and the Rev. Leon Holly will officiate at the services.
Burial will be in Vaiden

for Sarah Earnestine Randle, 83,
of Greenwood, who died of cancer Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Greenwood Health and Rehabilitation
Center, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. John's United
Methodist Church.
Miss Randle was a retired bookkeeper with the F.W. Woolworth Co. in Jackson, where she worked
for 38 years until
her retirement in the early 1970s.
She was a native of Vaiden. She was a graduate of Vaiden
High School and Holmes Junior College.
She moved to Greenwood after she retired and
became an active member of St.
John's United Methodist Church.
She was active in the Nelson-Taylor and Wallace Sunday School classes. She was
active in the Women of the Church and served as communion steward for many
years.
She is survived by three brothers, Frank Randle and Grider Randle, both of Greenwood, and Dale Randle of West
Point; and many nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Robert Gill will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Vaiden Cemetery
Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of Mrs. Randle.
Visitation will be from 5

of Vaiden, who died of congestive heart failure Saturday, July 8, 2000, at her son's home in Gary,

Mrs. Woods was a homemaker and a member of Aacona Baptist
Church near Vaiden. She
was a native of Carroll
County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. Woods. She is survived by five
sons, C.J. Woods, Bobby G. Woods, Eddie James Woods and Ressie Woods, all of
Gary, and Mal Woods of Memphis; three daughters, Annie B. Griffin of West,
Annie Ruth Johnson of Vaiden and Louise Morris of Gary; mother, Hattie K.
Lockhart of Vaiden; two sisters, Mary McKinney of Chicago Heights, Ill., and
Flora Lee Demmings of Memphis; one brother, Jessie Elder of Vaiden; 56 grandchildren and 92 great-grandchildren.

for Jerry Wayne Hughes, Sr., 52,
of Vaiden, who died of cancer Friday, July 14, 2000,
at his residence, will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Williams &
Lord Chapel in Greenwood.
He was born in Greenwood
and was a lifelong resident. He had lived in Vaiden since 1998. He worked for Thompson
Machinery for 31
years as a welder. He played in the "Wintergreen" band for 25 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Hughes Jr. He is survived by his
wife, Shirley Bowers Hughes of Vaiden; one son, Rodney Hughes of Greenwood; one daughter, Melissa Moffett of Kosciusko; one
stepdaughter, Cecelia Tucker of Vaiden; two sisters, Marilyn Turner of Jackson
and Debbie Hall of Greenwood; his mother, Winnie Seary of Greenwood; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6
to 8 p.m. Friday at
the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Williams, Billy Womble, Paul Melton, Frank
Montgomery, Benny Barrentina, Michael Boles, David Browning, and Woodrow

- Services for Charles E. Melton, 89, of Vaiden, who died of kidney failure Monday,
July, 24, 2000, at Montfort
Jones Memorial
Hospital in Kosciusko, were to be at 2 p.m. today at Oliver Funeral Home

Mr. Melton was a retired employee of the Mississippi Forestry Commission. He
was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Midway United
Methodist Church
in Vaiden.
His wife, Lorene Noah Melton, preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Melton Leach of Vaiden and two
grandchildren.
The Rev. Jimmy Latham was to have officiated at the services. Burial was to be

of Vaiden, who died of injuries from a worksite accident Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, near Winona,

Mr. Greer was employed as a construction laborer for J.J. Ferguson Sand &
Gravel Co. of Greenwood.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Harrell of Winona;
two brothers, Jim Greer of Tupelo and Sam Greer
Jr. of Vaiden; and two sisters, Ersie Foreman of Carrollton
and Mattie Skinner of Memphis.
The Rev. Johnny Butts will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Vaiden Community
Cemetery.

- Services for the Rev. Earl Ezell, 65, of Eupora, who died of heart failure
Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at Webster Health Services,
were held Tuesday at 2
p.m. at Oliver Funeral Home in Eupora.
Ezell graduated from Greenwood High School in 1952 and completed a bachelor's degree at Mississippi College in 1956. He graduated from New Orleans Baptist
Theological Seminary in 1961.
He was ordained and licensed by Calvary
Baptist Church
in Greenwood in
1952. He served Mount Vernon Baptist
Church in West from 1952 to 1961, Vaiden
Baptist Church
from 1961 to 1963, Second
Baptist Church
in Kosciusko from 1963
to 1968, Meadowood Baptist
Church in Amory from 1968 to 1982, Southside
Baptist Church
in Greenville from 1982 to 1996 and Sapa
Baptist Church
in Eupora from 1997
until his death.
He served on various associational committees in Holmes, Attala, Monroe and Washington counties. He
was president of the Pastors Conference in Monroe and Washington counties and
vice president of the Mississippi Delta Pastors Conference. He served on the
Associational Building Committee for the new missions building in Washington County.
He served on the convention board in the Monroe Association for six years and
on the Washington Association's convention board for six years. He also served
on the following committees: executive, new church expansion, assemblies,
grounds and budget.
He is survived by his wife, Zenobia Shurden Ezell of Eupora; two daughters,
Melanie Flippo of Amory and Gwenda Sanderson of Augusta, Ga.;
his mother, Grace Causey Ezell of Eupora; one brother, Willie Wayland
"Sonny" Ezell of Carrollton; and three grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 6
to 9 p.m. Monday at
the funeral home.
The Revs. Cornell Daughtry and Bernett Fielder officiated at the services.
Burial was in Sapa Cemetery in Webster County.
Pallbearers were Doyle Cummings, James Bryant, Gene Foshee, Harvie Jackson,
J.B. Rowe, Bill Stewart, Ken Strickland and Willie Weddle. Friends served as

having worked as a cook at Hathorn

Mrs. Rogers was a retired educator and a graduate of Mississippi Valley
State University.
She had served as secretary of the Baptist Zion District Congress Training
Union and treasurer of the Zion District Ushers Association. She was president
of the usher board from 1953
to 1996. She was
a member of Mount
Zion Missionary
Baptist Church.
She is survived by her brother, George Lofton of Vaiden.

- Services for Claude G. Cox, 100,
of Vaiden, who died of heart failure Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Tyler
Holmes Hospital
in Winona, will
be at 2 p.m. Friday
at Shongalo Presbyterian Church in Vaiden.
Mr. Cox was a farmer and an elder at Shongalo Presbyterian Church. He also
drove a school wagon and a school bus.
His daughter-in-law, Alice Cox of Vaiden, remembered that she was one of the
students Mr. Cox transported in a camper-style bus, starting in 1944. He drove that type of bus
and a regular yellow school bus until 1970, when he retired.
However, Mr. Cox was 16
when started driving a school wagon from Elliott to Blackmonton about three
years, starting in 1916.

Mr. Cox turned 100 on Nov. 6, 2000. The family celebrated with
a party at the church. More than 200
people came to wish him well, Mrs. Cox said.

Mr. Griffin was a retired high school teacher who taught in schools in Michigan, New York and Massachusetts. A native
of Bedford, Mass.,
he was a graduate of Fairhaven
High School.

All Bristol County Football Team. In 1947,
he was the recipient of the Sparrow Cup. He was inducted into the Fairhaven
High School Hall of Fame in June 2000.
He was a graduate of the University
of Maine at Orono, where
he played on the 1953-1954 state championship football
team.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. His
family said he enjoyed fishing and the great outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Griffin of Vaiden; a daughter, Nancy Kibe of
Beacon, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Jan Maddox of Vaiden; three sons, Brian Griffin
of Pawling, N.Y., William Griffin of Wareham, Mass., and James Griffin of
Highland, N.Y.; a sister, Shirley Perry of Fall River, Mass.; by the mother of
his children, Grace Gleason of Lagrangeville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

and was an avid golfer. He lived in Rosedale prior to moving to Greenwood. He was a
Baptist.
