Vaiden Family Lineage DR. COWLES MEAD VAIDEN ( Dr. Vaiden’s Information Submitted by Harry
Campbell Vaiden III ) Joseph Vaiden of BAD BLOOD When Thomas Cowles (grandfather to
Dr. Cowles Mead Vaiden) died in 1787, Nathaniel Cowles (Dr. Vaiden’s
uncle), being Thomas’ oldest son, was listed as Administrator of the Thomas
Cowles Estate. Joseph Vaiden, Jr. Esq. (Dr. Vaiden’s
father – and brother-in-law to Nathaniel Cowles) and several other
brothers-in-law of Joseph Vaiden, Jr. Esq., filed suit against Nathaniel Cowles
for inequitable distribution of property. Although Nathaniel Cowles died in or
around 1816, the case of Vaiden & Otey v.
Cowles was eventually appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in
1825. The outcome and text of this case was apparently lost or misplaced when
records were moved during the Peninsular Campaign in the Civil War. It will be
provided here if and when it becomes available. Other cases concerning Nathaniel
Cowles’ distribution of property arose during that time. One case, Vaiden & c. v. Bell was also
appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in 1825. The lawsuits filed and/or
represented by Joseph Vaiden, Jr. Esq. caused bad blood between Joseph and
Sally Cowles Vaiden (Dr. Vaiden’s parents). Because
of this, Sally wished, upon her death in 1850, to be buried beside her brother
Nathaniel Cowles, rather than beside her husband, Joseph Vaiden, Jr. Esq. Joseph (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/134080604/joseph-vaiden)
is buried across the road from one of their homes, Meadow Springs, while Sally and Nathaniel
are buried at Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery. Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery is
located at 19300 The Glebe Lane
(Rt. 615) Holdcroft, Charles City County, Virginia, 23030. Joseph Vaiden,
Jr.’s grave is located 2.71 miles away at 17301
